True wireless earbuds have come a long way. What used to be a compromise in sound quality and reliability is now a legitimate alternative to wired headphones. But not all earbuds are created equal. Here is what to look for.
1. Bluetooth Version
Bluetooth 5.3 is the current standard to look for. It offers better power efficiency, more stable connections, and lower latency than older versions. If you watch videos or play games, lower latency means audio stays in sync with the picture. Avoid earbuds with Bluetooth 4.x, they will have more dropouts and shorter range.
2. Battery Life
Look at two numbers: earbud battery (per charge) and total battery (with charging case). Good earbuds offer 5 to 8 hours per charge and 25 to 35 hours total with the case. If you commute or travel, total battery life matters more than single-charge life because you will top up throughout the day.
3. Sound Quality
Driver size matters. Earbuds with 10mm or larger drivers generally produce fuller bass and clearer highs. Look for support for AAC and aptX codecs if you use an iPhone or Android respectively, as they deliver higher quality audio over Bluetooth.
4. Fit and Comfort
Earbuds that do not fit well sound worse and fall out. Look for earbuds that come with multiple ear tip sizes. Silicone tips provide a good seal for noise isolation, while memory foam tips conform to your ear canal for a custom fit. If you exercise, look for earbuds with ear hooks or fins for extra security.
5. Water Resistance
If you plan to use your earbuds during workouts or in the rain, look for an IPX4 rating or higher. This means they can handle sweat and light splashes. IPX5 or IPX7 ratings offer even more protection but are less common in compact earbuds.
6. Controls and Features
Touch controls are standard now, but some are better than others. Look for earbuds with customizable controls so you can set tap patterns for play/pause, skip, and volume. Some earbuds also offer transparency mode, which uses microphones to let outside sound in, useful for conversations without removing the earbuds.
